Shinnyo-En Lantern Floating Ceremony

This past weekend I won a trip to Hawaii for writing an essay on interfaith relations and peace between religions. A part of the trip was being invited to attend the annual Lantern Floating ceremony for Shinnyo-Buddhism. More than 40,000 people attend this event, and I was lucky enough to have reserved seats. This turned out to be pretty useful since I got to be super close to the lanterns and got some great photographs.
The point of the lanterns is to be in memory of people who have passed away. People write on their lantern, either writing letters to the deceased, or any sort of prayer.
There were over 2,000 lanterns in the water this year, the photographs came out amazing.

Scott Merritt – Life Tastes Good

A few weeks ago I was up in a campsite in the San Jose Mountains with some friends, and Scott and I decided to do a Coke-Like photoshoot. We shot with completely natural light after we realized that the solar-powered power outlets didn’t have nearly enough charge to accommodate the alienbees I brought. Here’s my favorite shot.

Canon 60D with a 50mm f/1.8

Elyse Berlinberg

A while back I was doing some photoshoots with friends at nighttime and I snapped this picture of my friend Elyse. It was actually almost completely dark, and I put the camera on a 20 second exposure. It was tough for Elyse to stay completely still, but the picture came out pretty great.

San Francisco

Here’s a picture I shot in San Francisco this past weekend right after dawn. I’m not too great with landscapes, so I usually won’t go out of my way to shoot them, but this picture was definitely worth the effort.

Canon 60d with a 28-135mm f/3.5

Ghost Pictures

I was in San Fracisco this weekend with my friends Omri & Yonatan, so we stopped on the way to take pictures with the 49ers Candlestick Stadium in the background. Balieve it or not, these pictures were actually taken in the middle of the night at pitch black darkness, and there is zero photoshop involved.

So many photoshoots in one night.

This past weekend at my youth group event I brought my camera equipment and offered to photoshoot people. So many people were eager to jump in front of the camera that I figured I’d just post all the pictures in one post rather than splitting them up. Here are some of my favorites.

Canon 60d with a 50mm f/1.4 an alien bee b800 and a 580ex ii

Yonatan Zelnik Pt. 2

On sunday I had a relaxed photoshoot at Stanford with my friend Yonatan. Usually all my pictures have the subject staring staring straight at the camera, so this time I tried to have him staring anywhere but the camera. Here are my two favorite shots from the shoot.

Canon 60d with a 50mm f/1.4 and a 580ex ii

Alex Merritt & Sagee Moyal – Golf

This past week I also did another concept shot with my friends Alex and Sagee. We were going for a more humorous picture. Look at the picture for a few second until you notice what I’m referring to.

Canon 60D with a 50mm f/1.4 an alien bee b800 and a 580ex ii.

The Ultimate Bro

This week I did a fun photoshoot with my friend Sagee. We tried to greatly exaggerate the “Frat-Bro” lifestyle in the shoot. Here’s the picture and a behind the scenes shot.

Canon 60D with a 50mm f/1.4 an alien bee b800 and a 580ex ii.

Prescription Beats (Siavash Zohoori)

This week my friend asked me to take a commercial picture for his beats company called Prescript Beats. Took some time to edit in CS5, but I finally got a result that I really like. This is one of the few opportunities I’ve had to do commercial shoots, and it was pretty great.

I also took one portrait of him for fun.

Check out Siavash’s music at http://www.facebook.com/prescriptionbeats

Prom Pictures

My friends Yael, Sam, and Hila asked me to take pictures before their prom, and I was more than happy too. If you want me to take your prom pictures email me at guysingerphotography@gmail.com!!

South Bay Teen Idol – Finals

Yesterday I shot pictures at the finals for the South Bay Teen Idol where I’ve been shooting for the last two months. The singing was amazing in the final round, and I took a risk experimenting with my Alienbee. I think some of the shots came out pretty great. Here are my favorites.

Canon 60d with a 28-135 f/3.5, a 580ex ii, and an Alienbee b800.

Scott Merritt

This week my new Alienbee b800 strobe light came in the mail, so I decided to use it and continue the series about kids in adult clothing doing childish things, so I had my friend Scott come  over and we shot around in my living room. At first the learning curve with using the b800 was pretty slow, since it’s so much more powerful than the speedlites I’m used to, but once I got it things went much smoother. Here’s my favorite shot from the day and a behind the scenes shot.

The Georgian Terrace Hotel

A week ago I was in a youth group convention in Atlanta, Georgia. The hotel we stayed at was a beautiful old hotel called the Georgian Terrace. They had this amazing round structure above the main lobby, spanning over 30 stories, so I set up my tripod and snapped a few pictures of it. Here is my favorite photo.

Canon 60D with a 50mm f/1.8

South Bay Teen Idol – Semifinals

Last week I photographed the second round of the South Bay Teen Idol competition at the APJCC. Lighting was much better this time around, since they decided to turn on the stage lights, and turn off the fluorescent lights. I got a bunch of great shots, but here are my three favorites.

Canon 60D with a 28-125 f/3.5 and two 580 EX ii’s

Highway Photoshoot – Daniel Keidar

A while back I promised I would post pictures from the night where we drove around searching for awesome places to shoot, and I just realized I never fulfilled that promise. Here’s a picture from that night. We noticed that there were no cars on the highway, so we decided to try something pretty high-risk and do a photoshoot in the middle of Highway 85. Here’s my favorite shot.

Canon 60D with a 50mm f/1.8 and two 580EX ii’s

Eric LaBouve

This past weekend my friends and I decided to spend an entire night searching for great photoshoot locations. We shot everywhere from the middle of the highway at 3AM (those photos will be posted soon) to Hunter’s Point during the sunrise. Here are two photos of my friend Eric from the shoot at hunter’s point.

Canon 60D with a 50mm f/1.8 and two 580EX ii’s

Yonatan Zelnik

Today I started the first few pictures of what I think I’ll turn into a series. I got together with my friend Yonatan, dressed him up in a suit, and shot pictures in a playground. I’m going to try shooting other teens in “grown-up” clothes doing childish things. I’ll post an explanation of the point behind the pictures when the series is done. Here are the first two pictures from the series, and a behind the scenes shot.

What’s the best Camera in the world? The one you always have on you.

Phone photography is starting to get more and more popular nowadays, and with good reason. As photographers we’re often told to take our camera with us wherever we go, and that’s because the more often we have our cameras, the more chances we have for great shots. For that reason, it becomes clear that cameras that are smaller and more portable have a great advantage. And even if you sacrifice some quality, it’s also said that a great photographer can take a good picture with any camera.
So this weekend I tried doing some photography with my cellphone, here’s the results. (Post-processed with Apple Aperture 3.)

Jugtown Pirates

A while back when I was at Haight & Ashbury with my friends, there was this amazing country/bluegrass plan just playing on the doorstep of one of the houses in the street. I took a few photos, but never came around to looking at them again. This week while scrolling through old photos I found this gem, and spent some time editing it to make it look good. Here’s the final result.

Shelley Baker Pt. 3

After the South Bay Teen Idol competition, I also met up with my friend Shelley to have another photoshoot with her. It was the first time I was using two speedlights, so I was still trying to get the hang of how to utilize them correctly. Here are two of my favorite pictures from the shoot.

South Bay Teen Idol

A week ago I got hired to photograph the South Bay Teen Idol (http://www.siliconvalleyjcc.org/idol/) at the APJCC. The lighting was extremely tricky since the stage lights weren’t turned on and instead there were only fluorescents, but luckily I had my new speedlight, so I was able to use both of my speedlights.
Here are some of my favorite pictures from the event.

Liana Riley Pt. 2

This past weekend I met up with some friends to do a few photoshoots. I got a second speedlight, and I was going to experiment with the lighting, but this was the last photoshoot of the day and the sun was setting, so I ended up shooting with 100% natural light.

Kayla Berlinberg

This past week I had a photoshoot with my friend Kayla. We drove up to the Mountain Winery in Saratoga, to get some of the ambient light when the sun was setting over the hills. At first I shot with a flash, but my favorite photos came from 100% natural lighting. Here are my three favorite shots from the shoot.

Shelley Baker Pt. 2

At the same time when I was doing the photoshoot of both Daniel and Shelley, I also took some individual portraits of Shelley. Here’s my favorite shot from the shoot, and a behind the scenes shot.
I used my usual 50mm f/1.8, stopped down a little to make the background sharp, with a 580ex ii as a fill light.

Daniel & Shelley

When I was in Tahoe two weeks ago I also got the chance to have a photoshoot with two of my friends who are dating. The lighting setup was tricky, but we managed to get these four great shots.
50mm f/1.8 with a 580ex ii flash. On two of the shots it was all natural lighting.

The Amirs in Arizona

Last week when I was in Arizona, my dad and I met up with our friends who also happened to be in the same city that week. As we were waiting to go into the animal preserve I posted about recently, we found a spot with near perfect lighting to shoot in front of. Here are two of my favorite shots from that day.
50mm f/1.8 wide open with a 580ex ii flash at about half power.

Sagee Moyal

Here’s a picture of my friend Sagee that I took this week. He calls this the “Mac Miller Photo”
The photo was taken with completely natural lighting.
50mm f/1.8 stopped down to 4.0

Omri Hazan

I had a quick photoshoot with my friend Omri this week. We just tried to stay away from photos where he’s looking into the camera, since most of my photos have the subjects staring straight at the camera. I’ll be trying to experiment with doing things differently nowadays, this is the start.
All natural lighting, taken with a 50mm f/1.8

Pilgrim The Giraffe

When I was in Arizona last week, I got the chance to go to a wildlife preserve. Here’s a shot I snapped of a giraffe named Pilgrim.I usually don’t shoot wildlife, my main area is portraiture, but I’m trying to broaden horizons a bit.
All natural lighting taken with a 28-135 f/3.5 wide open.

Rachel England

Here are some pictures I took over the last few weeks of Rachel.

Lake Tahoe

Here are some photos I took at Lake Tahoe this weekend. It’s weird for me to photograph landscapes and wildlife, since usually I’m so heavily focused on portraiture. But I’ll be exploring new photography techniques and ideas, so I thought I might give it a shot.
28-135 f/3.5 lens stopped down to sharpen and avoid chromatic abberation.

Me

Here’s a picture of me my friend Yifat took this week. I set up my camera, and tested all the settings, and then let her snap the shot.

Matt Rozenboim

Here’s a headshot from a shoot I had with my friend matt. We used my friend Ben’s strobes for the photo (benrevzin.com). We placed one strobe to either side.
50mm f/1.8 stopped down to 3.8

Alex Hammer

I had a shoot with my friend Alex this week. I was going for a more angry look this time, rather than the usual happy/passive pictures.

Danielle Koppel

Yesterday I had a fun photoshoot with my friend danielle. There was lots of direct sunlight outside, which can usually be a disadvantage, so I tried using it to compliment the photos.

Ben Revzin Photography

My friend Ben Revzin is also a fellow photographer, I often talk to him about light setups and new equipment. You can check out his stuff here: benrevzin.wordpress.com

Here’s a great photo he took of me this week:

Deborah Dehovitz

Here’s a photo from a quick shoot I did with my friend Deborah.

Jamie Weiss

Here’s a photo from a shoot I had a couple of weeks ago with my friend Jamie.

Daniel Keidar

The other day I went over with a few of my friends to my friend Ben’s house. Ben has an amazing lighting setup, with 4 strobes, and so he let me play around with them and shoot my friend Keidar. We ended up placing two strobes of either side of him, with one strobe behind him.
50mm f/1.8 stopped down to 2.8

Ben also does a lot of photography, you can find your stuff here: benrevzin.com

John Bodansky

A few days ago my friend John, an aspiring actor who goes to school in France, needed some head shots for his auditions. Not exactly sure in which direction we wanted to go, we just tried a bunch of different techniques for the photoshoot. Here are my favorite three pictures.

Sammy Katz

At the summer program I went to a few weeks ago, I also had a small shoot with my friend Sammy. he was a pleasure to shoot, and was fun in front of the camera. Sammy comes from Indiana, and he often chews on strands of grass, so we shot with a piece of wheat in his mouth.

Liana Riley

Yesterday I went to Saratoga to have a photoshoot with my friend Liana. 20110814-063339.jpg20110814-064238.jpg20110814-064905.jpg

Jordan Shipowitz

For the past five weeks I’ve been at a BBYO summer program in Lake Como, Pennsylvania. While there, I had a bunch of opportunities to have photoshoots. My friend Jordan was easily one of the funnest people to photograph, she was a natural in front of the camera.

Alex Merritt

This weekend I had a casual shoot with my friend Alex. Here are two of my favorite photos:

Andrea Resnick

This past week I had a quick photoshoot with my friend Andrea. Here are two of my favorite photos.

Day Of Shooting With Scott

Since i have barely had any time lately for photography, and today was a pretty free day, I had my good friend Scott Merritt come over so we could have a very casual shoot. Here are some of my favorite photos.

Quick Headshot

A little while ago my friend scott came over and we took a few quick headshots. Here is my favorite shot.

Little Sister

This weekend I had a mini-photoshoot with my sister.

Scott Merritt – Unposted

Here is a photo from my photoshoot with Scott a while ago that I never ended up posting.

Noah’s Bar-Mitzvah

A while ago I got hired to photograph a bar-mitzvah. Here are some pictures from the event.

Last Day Of Summer W/ Scott Merritt

Today is the last day of summer before it’s time to go back to school. So what better way to spend it than at a photoshoot with my friend Scott. :)

Noa Lachyani

While I was in Israel a friend of one of my relatives asked me to take pictures of her for auditions.

Zachary Stanton-Savitz

Here are two photos from my photoshoot with my friend Zach that I never posted.

Headshots for Jordan

Sorry i haven’t posted anything in a long time, but I’ve been in Israel for the last seven weeks. Here are headshots my friend Jordan asked me to take of him a while back.

Newspaper Article

Last week  the photo of Jon Alcabes which won first place was published in the Palo Alto Weekly. The photo was also hung up in the Palo Alto Art Center, so if you want, you can go and see it. Here is the article from the Newspaper.

Zachary Stanton-Savitz: Lost Childhood

Today I had the opportunity to take some pictures with my friend Zach. He’s an aspiring videographer, and after watching a surrealist video he made about a boy who realizes his childhood is gone i got inspired. We walked over to mitchell park and took some pictures in the playground.

Michael Kagan

This past weekend i attended a BBYO convention, and I had the chance to take some photos of my friend michael. I was going for a more natural, almost Abercrombie Ad looking photo.

Scott Merritt Pt. 2

This past weekend we had an overnight trip up in the San Jose mountains, so I took some pictures of my friend scott.

Troubled Skies

This week I have been extremely busy and haven’t had much time for photography, so here is a photo that I took a while ago in Utah.

Ella Katzir

A few weeks ago our family friends asked me to take some photos of their youngest daughter, Ella, here are the photos I never got around to posting.

Michelle Rubinstein Pt. 2

Since it was so fun to photograph her last time, I asked michelle to let me take some pictures of her this past friday. Unfortunately the location we wanted to use was locked, so we ended up just taking some normal pictures. I am definitely going to try again for that location though.

Las Vegas

Lately I’ve been trying to learn more about photographing landscapes and cities. Here is a picture I took a while ago in las vegas.

Scott Merritt

Today at the BBYO event i was eager to continue experimenting with my speedlite, so i pulled my friend scott aside and took some pictures of him. Here are my two favorites.

Kalli Smith

Today i was eager to try out a new bounce card that my friend had made for my speedlite, so I walked over to mitchell park with my friend kalli and took some head shots. It’s amazing how much of a difference a speedlite can make.

Samantha Stein

They other day I had planned a shoot with my friend Samantha to be held at the old Albertson’s center in Palo Alto. Unfortunately, when we got there, the center was in the process of being torn down by bulldosers. Leaving the location we improvised and instead took some pictures in an alley behind Happy Donuts.

Kelly and Roy

At the BBYO regional event today I had so many opportunities to take pictures of people that I couldn’t wait to post some more. Here are two pictures of my friends Roy and Kelly.

Matt Farberov

Over this weekend I attended a regional BBYO event where we did community service. We drove down to half moon bay and tore out invasive weeds. Near the end of the event I slipped down to the beach with my friend Matt and took some photos.

Tzvia Cahn

Lately I have been having more and more organized shoots. Today i walked to an underpass in Palo Alto with my friend Tzvia, we spent some time taking photos next to a creek, here are three of the best ones.

Shaina Painter

The other day I went down to shoreline park to have a shoot with my friend Shaina. I tried involving the scenery more this time, here is a photo from that day.

Michelle Rubinstein

Lately I’ve been carrying my camera with me everywhere trying to get some good photos, but unfortunately I left my computer at school a week ago and was not able to edit any photos until now. Here are two photos I took a week ago at a BBYO regional convention.

Ghost Image

I’ve been trying to do more and more creative shots lately, here is a photo i snapped of my friend Kalli Smith.

Jon Alcabes

Lately I’ve been trying to do more organized shoots, rather than randomly snapping a headshot here or there. The other day I was out shooting with my friend Jonathan, and here are two of the best photos.

Jacob Rosenberg

As summer gets closer and closer to the bay area, the days are becoming clearer and providing amazing natural lighting. Here’s a photo I snapped the other day of my friend Jacob Rosenberg.

Hayley Epstein

With the last few weeks being very hectic for me, I haven’t had time to take any good photos, with a photography competition which I am participating in coming up soon, I decided to take one of the better of my old photos, and apply my current editing knowledge to reedit it.

Modeling Shoots

I tried producing some abercrombie/modeling like photos with my friends Scott and Daniel. It’s actually much harder to shoot these types of photos, because the person has to concentrate on their body angles and on their facial expressions at the same time. Here are my two favorite shots.

Canon 60D with a 50mm f/1.8 a 580ex II and an alienbee b800.

Balcony Shooting

The other day I was at a BBYO international convention in Dallas, Texas. There was a huge snow storm, and the white lighting from the overcast skies was ideal. My friend Tom Havin and I decided to go out to the balcony at our hotel and shoot some photos.

Max Kaplan

I was snapping some candids at my school, Kehillah Jewish High School. Lucky for me, it was overcast and raining, so the lighting was just right. Also lucky for me, I was at the right place at the right time to snap this photo of a guy named Max Kaplan.

I’m also on Tumblr!
